The Noah Centineo Obsession
October 4, 2018
When it comes to a celebrity, Loyola students are more likely to recognize a Netflix star than a couple of guys featured on the front page of a newspaper.
That’s the bottom line of a recent survey of 10 students who were shown pictures of three men: actor Noah Centineo, indicted Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke and Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
Not a single person in the poll could identify Van Dyke, who is on trial for the murder of teenager Laquan McDonald. One student, however, made an educated guess by interpreting his facial expression.
“I have no clue who this guy is. It is a pretty bad photo of him so I assume he did something bad,” said Emily Duong, a freshman engineering major.
Kavanaugh, whose nomination was in trouble after allegations of sexual assault surfaced, fared slightly better. Three students knew who he was, including Caroline Niepsuj, a junior studying secondary education.
“This photo makes me angry. I do not think he should be in a position of power,” she said.
Students might have struggled to identify the cop and the judge, but they sure knew who Centineo is. The actor became popular after starring in Netflix romantic comedies including “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “Sierra Burgess Is A Loser.”
Seven out of 10 surveyed recognized Centineo’s Instagram profile picture.
Sam Vasquez, an undecided freshman, didn’t know Centineo’s name, but made it clear that she was attracted to his looks. “I do not know who he is but I find him cute,” Vasquez said with a smile.
Whether if Noah Centineo deserves this popularity is debatable, but there are a few people that find joy in being a “fangirl”. Radia Daud, a junior majoring in nursing, said the actor makes his fans happy.
“There is a lot of negativity in this world. Constant shootings and unlawful people in power are just a few examples. Reading negative things can be overwhelming.” Radia continues, “However, Noah makes you see the positives in the world. When you get to know him, you can tell he is a genuine, relatable and open-minded guy.”
